Uriah Heep - Chaos & Colour

1 Minute Review

"Chaos & Colour" is the 25th studio album from British hard rock legends Uriah Heep. The band, who formed in 1969, have been a prominent force in the rock music scene for over five decades and have released numerous hit albums throughout their career. The band is currently composed of Phil Lanzon (keyboards), Bernie Shaw (lead vocals), Mick Box (guitar), Russell Gilbrook (drums), and Dave Rimmer (bass guitar).

The band is known for their hit songs such as "Easy Livin'," "July Morning," "Lady in Black" and "Stealin'," which helped establish them as one of the leading bands in the progressive rock and hard rock genres. They have released numerous albums throughout their career, some of their most successful include "Demons and Wizards" (1972), "The Magician's Birthday" (1972), and "Look at Yourself" (1971).

What Worked

Listening to the latest release by the legendary Uriah Heep in 2023, it becomes apparent the band, with guitarist Mick Box the only remaining member of the original lineup, would fit in neatly with modern rock artists such as Ghost, Goodbye June or Rival Sons. From the progressive elements in the organ-driven "Fly Like an Eagle" to the straightforward rock of opener "Save Me Tonight," the album sounds fresh and in tune with the 70s hard rock revival currently taking place. Special consideration needs to go out to Jay Ruston as producer, who captures the band's heavy tunefulness with an expert ear.

What Didn't Work

A few of the tracks. like seven and half minute "One Nation, One Sun," and eight plus minute long "Freedom To Be Free" overstay their welcome a bit, pushing the album to nearly sixty minutes when forty-four is a better target.
