Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - Council Skies

1 Minute Review

Produced by Noel and Paul 'Strangeboy' Stacey, "Council Skies" is Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds fourth studio album and is widely regarded as Noel's most complete solo statement. The album's release coincides with a 26-date USA tour, co-headlining with Garbage, followed by UK outdoor shows and headline festival performances. The band will also take a full UK arena tour in December 2023. "Council Skies" is available in various formats, including CD, heavyweight vinyl, LP picture disc, digital versions, and a Dolby Atmos spatial audio edition. The album features three tracks with Johnny Marr, adding to its musical prowess.

What Worked

Sounding the least like his former band, Gallagher is able to play in the studio with an array of sounds and colors not present in previous work. Gallagher's long standing ability to craft engaging and memorable melodies is unparalleled, and this album is a prime example of his songwriting prowess. Council Skies offers a sense of musical nostalgia while still feeling fresh and modern. Gallagher effortlessly draws inspiration from various eras and genres, creating a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary. It's a testament to his ability to evolve as an artist while staying true to his roots without repeating himself.

What Didn't Work

Gallagher's voice was built for the ballad, so the Marr-assisted "Pretty Boy" sounds a bit thin with Noel behind the mic, missing the snarling delivery of his brother. And that, in the end, is the outcome of Liam and Noel having spent the last twenty odd years feuding instead of making music together - each delivering a solid album every few years that would be much better with their sibling in tow.
