I saw them at the Brixton Academy in London around the time of their 'Rock Action' album. I went in not knowing what to expect. I had to work the next day and decided not to drink anything. My god, the sonic carnage that was unleashed was pure mayhem, but also beautiful at the same time. However, I DIDN'T have earplugs and I always stand as close to the front as I can (even to this day), but Mogwai's decibels were too much for me and I retreated to the back of the floor. Their final song was frenzied and descended into white noise, unlike anything before it. I honestly thought the roof of the Academy was going to open up and we were all going to be teleported into some sonic vortex into deep space.

A year or two later, their 'Happy Songs' album came out, and I bought tickets, this time at the Scala. I took a friend and without hesitation, I grabbed the free earplugs they were handing out at the door!
