Little John - Derailer
On the 1995 Derailer the scrappy pop-rock of Little John strikes an interesting chord between Dinosaur Jr. guitar riffs and TMBG quirkiness
The late mid-to-late 90s were overwhelming based on the number of new album releases each week. Unfortunately, that meant bands like Little John either had a breakout single and video or were quickly relegated to the cut-out bin. In the case of their 1996 album Derailer, full of pop-rock that veers between Dinosaur Jr. guitar riffs and the quirky lyrics and melodies of They Might Be Giants, the band crafted some earworms alongside some less engaging album tracks. From the opening title track to the Presidents Of The United States of America-esque "Evel Knievel," the band craft tight, fun songs that more people should know. June Album Review Tournament - Final
Which album should we feature in a future episode of Dig Me Out? Here's how it works. We'll post a group of nine suggested albums from the hopper weekly. Cast your vote to decide the albums to move forward. The top two winners from each group face off in a final poll at the end of the month.
Group 1-3 Winners
Willie Dillon: Heatmiser - Cop and Speeder
Darren Leeman: The Matthew Good Band - Beautiful Midnight
Beautiful Midnight is somewhat of a concept record, with the first track, the pounding rocker "Giant," starting at 5 P.M. and the gorgeous, somber, sad ballad "Running For Home" chiming it around sun-up. The whole record is pretty depressing as Good sings about a boy in a mental institution ("A Boy And His Machine Gun"), the homeless ("Strange Days"), suicide ("Going All The Way"), and even psychopathic killers ("Born To Kill"). The eeriness of it all is what really strikes through. Good's voice trembles, quakes, and shivers while the band runs circles around his lyrics with pounding rhythms and melodic guitar parts.
Richard Waterman: Poster Children - RTFM
Really good rock record and more accessible than their other albums. My favourite album of theirs. Great production and sounds like a band playing together in a room.
Darren Leeman: Rancid - and out come the wolves
The bay city punk-rockers 3rd album introduced a whole new generation of kids to punk, ska and the clash. The social and political statements and stories of folks on hard times still hold up.
Kyle Bittner: Doughboys - CRUSH
Canadian power pop with muscular guitars and melodic vocals. This would fit with fans of Redd Kross and Seaweed.
Patrick Testa: Sam Phillips - Martinis & Bikinis
There are so many good alt-pop-rock songs with variations in instrumentation and pleasant strings on this record which help make it an easy and fun listen. Sam Phillips was married to T-Bone Burnett during this part of her career who also produced. I am (un)fairly criticized for not liking (enough) pop music - so... see!
