Electronic music duo Orbital has released their tenth album, "Optical Delusion". This is their first new album since 2018's "Monsters Exist" and follows their thirtieth-anniversary album "30 Something" released earlier this year. The album features brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, who are known for their use of live instrumentation and sampling techniques. Orbital has a history that spans over three decades and has produced notable releases such as "In Sides" and "Snivilisation".
What Worked
With lyrics and themes directly impacted by the global Covid-19 pandemic, Orbital continues its thirty-year run as a techno / electronic pioneer with constant evolution. On Optical Delusion, the due once again welcomes a small group of collaborators that help elevate the tracks beyond dancefloor bangers. On "Dirty Rat," Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods spits a speak-sing attack on Brexit, while Dina Ipavic provides a haunting vocal atop "Day One."
What Didn't Work
If there is one missing element to Optical Delusion, it's' the diversions into more experimental territory. While there are plenty of interesting melodies atop the four-on-the-floor beats, the music itself rarely stretches beyond what we've heard from the band on prior albums.
