What if Motörhead began inside a cosmic freak-out?

That is the disorienting pleasure of The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London, commonly shortened to Space Ritual. Released in May 1973 by United Artists Records, it was Hawkwind’s fourth album, a live double set assembled from performances at Liverpool Stadium and the Brixton Sundown in late 1972. It reached No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart, an astonishing result for an 86-minute collision of fuzz riffs, electronics, spoken-word science fiction, saxophone, flute, and long stretches where the song seems less interested in ending than escaping Earth’s gravity.

Hawkwind won the Dig Me Out poll with 43 percent of the combined vote, ahead of Nick Gilder’s City Nights, Irish Skid Row’s 34 Hours, and Bloodrock’s Bloodrock U.S.A. The album was suggested by Eric Peterson, and it gave all three of us a chance to confront a band we mostly knew through one looming name: Lemmy.

Before Motörhead Had a Name

Lemmy is not hiding in the background here.

Before he formed Motörhead, Lemmy Kilmister played bass for Hawkwind from 1971 to 1975. On Space Ritual, that bass is not merely holding down the root notes while the rest of the band floats away. It is a snarling, overdriven force, loud in the mix and constantly moving, often sounding like the engine beneath the entire spacecraft.

The strange thing is that Hawkwind does not sound much like Motörhead. This is not a rehearsal tape for “Ace of Spades.” It is slower, looser, murkier, and far more willing to let a riff repeat until it becomes hypnotic. Yet the clues are there. The aggressive pick attack, the distortion, the way the bass can carry a melody and a riff at the same time, all point toward what Lemmy would eventually turn into something louder, leaner, and absolutely unforgiving.

That is the fun archaeological dig inside this record. Strip away the spoken passages, the synth wash, the flute, the free-form detours, and some of these riffs could become early Motörhead songs with enough speed, compression, and attitude. Instead, Hawkwind lets them breathe for eight or ten minutes, sometimes longer. It is rock and roll built around propulsion rather than precision.

This was never meant to be background music.

Hawkwind’s Space Ritual was designed as a full sensory environment, not simply a live document. The original release came with a 32-page booklet, while the stage presentation involved dancers, mimes, lights, electronics, and science-fiction imagery. Michael Moorcock, the acclaimed science-fiction author associated with Hawkwind, contributed poetry and writing to the wider project.

That context matters, because listening digitally can make the record feel like a giant, baffling jam with strange interruptions. In the room, surrounded by strobes, dancers, noise, and a crowd committed to the trip, it was a happening. Hawkwind were not reproducing their studio material cleanly each night. They were creating a theatrical mess, partly structured and partly improvised, with enough moving parts to make even modern arena rock look restrained.

It also explains the album’s biggest challenge. An 86-minute double album asks a lot from a listener who has not already learned Hawkwind’s language. The music flows in and out of itself. A title may repeat until you find the hook, or it may never give you one in the conventional sense. The performance is compelling because it refuses ordinary rock rules, but that refusal can make the record feel like an experience you admire before you fully understand it.

The future is hiding in the feedback.

AllMusic describes Space Ritual as a volatile blend of prog, acid rock, proto-metal, science fiction, fantasy, and jazz, a combination that has aged into something prophetically influential rather than merely dated. That influence is easier to hear when we stop trying to force Hawkwind into the same box as Pink Floyd or Genesis. They may have shared a loose “space rock” designation, but Hawkwind’s music is more physical, more repetitive, and more confrontational.

“Brainstorm” has a violent, droning intensity that feels closer to later underground guitar music than the graceful expansiveness usually associated with progressive rock. “Orgone Accumulator” rides a heavy blues groove that could be a distant ancestor to desert rock, though Hawkwind stretch it into a ten-minute incantation rather than a compact riff rocker. “Space Is Deep” offers the closest thing to a recognizable, recurring melodic center, even as it remains submerged in effects and momentum.

That is why we kept hearing pieces of later bands in it: Sonic Youth, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, even the more exploratory corners of The Verve. It is not that Hawkwind sounds exactly like any of them. It is that the record makes a case for repetition, distortion, and atmosphere as a musical destination rather than just a bridge between verses.

The Songs That Pull You In

Not every orbit needs a map.

“Brainstorm” is the obvious entry point for anyone who wants the volume and physicality behind Hawkwind’s reputation. It is built on a relentless, heavy pulse that makes the band’s proto-metal reputation feel earned. “Lord of Light” stands out for its wild saxophone moments, a reminder that Hawkwind could bring jazz instrumentation into a hard-rock context without making it feel polite.

“Down Through the Night” and “Space Is Deep” provide more identifiable footholds, especially for listeners who need a phrase or chorus-like shape to grab onto. They show that beneath the electronics and cosmic theatre, Hawkwind understood the basic appeal of a riff, a repeated line, and a groove that will not quit.

Then there is “Orgone Accumulator,” which is both part of the appeal and part of the problem. The riff is thick, bluesy, and memorable. The lyric is built around a barrage of rhymes and repetition, making it goofy, oddly catchy, and a little exhausting over its full length. It is a perfect snapshot of Space Ritual: there is a genuinely great idea here, and Hawkwind refuses to leave it alone after three minutes.

The spoken-word interludes create an even stranger push and pull. They break the musical flow, but their cold, sci-fi language gives the whole thing an unnerving cult-object quality. A playlist of the spoken pieces alone might be a bizarrely effective entryway into this world.

Hawkwind found the riff. Then they kept looking.

The record’s excess is inseparable from its identity. Cutting it down into a sharp 40-minute set would make it more accessible, but it would also remove the sense of being trapped in a long, noisy, theatrical voyage. This is not music that politely arrives, makes its point, and leaves. It circles, drifts, blares, and occasionally seems to forget what planet it started on.

Still, a listener does not need to treat Space Ritual as a test of endurance. Sampling it is a completely valid way to experience it. Pull out a few tracks. Start with “Brainstorm,” “Space Is Deep,” “Orgone Accumulator,” and “Lord of Light.” Listen for Lemmy’s bass. Listen for the heavy, single-riff focus that would later emerge in stoner rock and heavy music. Then decide whether you want to spend the remaining hour traveling farther out.

That is also the limitation. The vocal melodies can feel functional rather than commanding, and the lyrics rarely supply the personality that a singer like Lemmy would later bring to a similarly blunt riff. The live presentation was clearly essential to Hawkwind’s power, but a streaming-era listener gets only the audio, not the dancers, lights, booklet, costumes, and collective sensory overload that helped turn the original show into a total artwork.

Our Verdict Stays in Orbit

This is not an easy record, but it is an unusually revealing one.

Space Ritual is a document of a band testing how far rock music could be pushed before it stopped behaving like conventional rock music. It is also a rare chance to hear Lemmy operating inside a radically different machine, with his future unmistakably present in his bass tone but not yet fully formed in the songs around him.

AllMusic hears an album whose wild mixture of acid rock, proto-metal, science fiction, and jazz has remained influential over time. We hear that influence too, even when the album’s length, spoken passages, and refusal to edit itself make the voyage feel more admirable than repeatable.

Would you want the whole double album, or a carefully selected EP-length passage through the ritual? Does Lemmy sound like Motörhead waiting to happen, or does Hawkwind erase that story more than it confirms it? Which piece of this noisy, cosmic puzzle still lands in 2026?
