🎙 New 90s Episode
Lilith Fair in the 90s
We revisit Lilith Fair with a roundtable of performers and concert-goers to discuss the musical and cultural impact of the festival
While the 90s were dominated by the touring festival as opposed to the current day destination festival, the first half and second half had decidedly different approaches. Lollapalooza took a variety of artists from across genres with the intention of exposing artists across differing fanbases, whereas the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E. Tour, and Lilith Fair each narrowed their focus. In the case of Lilith Fair, the simplistic history is that it was a female-centric folk tour, headlined by the likes of Sarah McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, and Sheryl Crow. In reality, over the course of three years, the festival provided a much broader spectrum of female artists, including Queen Latifah, Bonnie Raitt, Letters To Cleo, Liz Phair, Dance Hall Crashers, K's Choice, Luscious Jackson, Nenah Cherry, The Pretenders, Missy Elliott, The Cardigans, Susanna Hoffs, Juliana Hatfield, and many many more. To help us revisit we invited back a pair of performers (Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo and Jill Cunniff of Luscious Jackson) and a pair of attendees (friend of the show Matt Shiverdecker and show announcer Katie Minneci), along with special call-in guests performer Tracy Bonham and attendee John Cornish.

MTV buzz bin classic?! - Steven Muczynski, DMO Union
This why Dig me out is the best podcast on earth!!! where else would someone review this band and this album? if aliens happened upon the earth and wanted to know what the nineties sounded like... also if they wanted to see what 90's album art looked like then this would be a prime example. As far as the band goes I actually prefer their next album defenders of the universe. That album was much more of a post grunge sound with better pop song structures. The sound of this album can be attributed to Dave Jerden who made some of the best sounding rock records of this Era such as Dirt by AIC and Darkest Days by Stabbing Westward (EP. 377 DMO) (thanks AIRTABLE) I remember you guys loving the production of darkest days. The Album Jerden did after this was the sound of white noise by anthrax. On the whole I will say the mix is a bit muddy on this record but the overall sound is akin to ritual lo habitual by Jane's Addiction with a bit more grime and less reverb. My favourite songs are: let me know, anymore, Believe and green room (love the start of this song) the use of guitar on the record for atmosphere is pretty good too. I think if this was a tight ten songs then it would be a better result. The last two songs are not great. So switch tight brain with green room and it makes a WORTHY RECORD!!! - Richard Waterman, DMO Union
